Attention deficit disorder, or ADD, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, are thought to affect nearly 9 percent of children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adults can be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD as well. Both conditions significantly impact the affected individual and the entire family. Some herbal remedies may be helpful as part of a well-rounded plan to address ADD and ADHD. Of course, individual requirements vary, so before taking herbs for either of these conditions, discuss your treatment with a qualified health care professional.

About ADD & ADHD

ADHD and ADD are syndromes of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. They are considered disorders of development and disruptive behavior, and can affect learning and social function. There are three types -- predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and combined -- and a health care professional makes a diagnosis based on specific criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association. There is no exact known cause of ADD or ADHD, but possible contributors include genetics, altered brain function, prenatal exposure to alcohol, tobacco or drugs, childhood exposure to environmental toxins such as lead, and artificial food additives.

Herbal Remedies for ADD

Certain herbal remedies can help treat ADD by enhancing brain function and reducing symptoms. In her book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch suggests bacopa extract, ginkgo, ginseng, mullein oil and valerian. Bacopa, ginseng and mullein are helpful for memory, and ginkgo enhances brain function and concentration. Valerian shows dramatic results in ADD and ADHD, according to Balch, without side effects. Dosages of these herbs vary depending on an individual's age.

Ginkgo is a commonly used herbal remedy in Europe and the United States, taken to address a variety of concerns involving the brain and circulation. Ginkgo biloba is a tree that lives up to 1,000 years and is the oldest surviving tree species. Its fan-shaped leaves are used to make medicine. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ginkgo enhances memory, thinking, learning, social behavior and coordination in some individuals. Ginkgo's medicinal properties come from its flavonoids -- antioxidants that protect the body's tissues from damage -- and terpenoids, which improve blood flow.
