Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is characterized by insufficient hormone production by your thyroid. In addition to taking physician-prescribed synthetic thyroid hormones, you may also benefit from avoiding certain foods. These sources may slow your already underactive thyroid or interrupt your body's ability to utilize synthetic hormones. Consult with your health care provider before adjusting your diet to discuss additional concerns.
Vegetables
Consumption of vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, rutabagas, kohlrabi, mustard greens, kale, spinach and other cruciferous sources are associated with decreased thyroid functions, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. These vegetables contain isothiocyanates, molecules that reduce thyroid hormones essential to efficient metabolism and inhibit normal thyroid functions.
Soy
Soy-based foods like soybeans, soy milk, soy extract, tofu, tempeh and edamame may prevent your body from properly absorbing synthetic medication for your thyroid. MayoClinic.com suggests taking thyroid medication on an empty stomach and waiting at least four hours before consuming soy products. As a safety measure, read nutrition labels carefully since soy is a common food additive.
High-Fiber Foods
"The Thyroid Solution" by Dr. Ridha Arem notes that high fiber foods can interfere with thyroid medication. Although you do not need to limit or restrict these foods, you must time your meal consumption. Dr. Arem explains that consuming these food sources up to two hours before or after ingesting your medication should not pose serious problems. Typically, physicians recommend you take thyroid medication on an empty stomach. High-fiber foods include whole grains, beans and most vegetables and fruits.
Iodine
Your thyroid gland cells are the only cells in your body that can properly absorb iodine, a trace mineral. According to Dr. Ridha Arem in "The Thyroid Solution," consuming excessive amounts of iodine may lead to hypothyroidism or worsen your underactive thyroid condition. High iodine foods include eggs, kelp, cow's milk, yogurt and strawberries.
