The most common ankle injury in volleyball is an ankle sprain. A sprain occurs when your ankle is extended beyond its normal range of motion, stretching your ligaments and causing pain, swelling and limited movement. While a majority of ankle sprains heal on their own, ignoring one can lead to chronic pain and instability. Ankle braces are one possible solution for sprains, but they have their pros and cons.

Reasons for Using an Ankle Brace

Ankle braces are used in volleyball for a variety of reasons. You can use an ankle brace to return to competition from a sprain sooner than you might otherwise. You also can use an ankle brace if you are prone to sprains or experience chronic pain or instability in your ankles. Since no one ever plans on suffering an injury, you can wear an ankle brace for more stability and to reduce your chances of being injured.

Lace- Up Ankle Braces

Soft, lace-up ankle braces are normally made of Velcro and a fabric material. Lace-up braces are tough and durable and stabilize your foot and ankle well. Lace-up braces slide on your foot just like a pair of socks. Lace-up braces are the most popular kind because they work and are very simple. The downside to a fabric brace is that over time it is prone to wear and tear. This type of brace is generally used by players who need a little extra support as they recover from injury.

Mechanical Ankle Braces

Mechanical ankles braces are an effective means of injury prevention. Comprised of a plastic material with padding, Velcro and a foot stirrup, they allow for secure mobility of your ankle. However, the plastic portions of the brace can cause some discomfort.

Considerations

The type of ankle brace you choose is personal preference. For extremely light support, you can simply use an elastic wrap or athletic tape. Many volleyball players use the mechanical model rather than the lace-up type because the lace-up brace can weaken your ankles over time.
