It is important for kids, especially elementary-age students, to get exercise on a daily basis. Regular exercise helps promote physical fitness and can improve self-esteem. Because of funding and state regulations, many physical fitness programs in schools are getting cut. It is important to have safe, new equipment and fitness facilities available for kids, so they stay physically fit and prepare for after-school sporting activities.

Types

There is a variety of exercise equipment that can be used in middle schools. While many school districts may use outdated or overused exercise equipment, making sure parts are in proper working order is essential for safety reasons. Treadmills can be used in middle school. They assist with strength training and basic walking techniques. Other types of equipment that can be purchased new include stair climbers, stationary bikes, weight benches, hand weights, resistance machines, monkey bars, gym mats, balance beams and gymnastic bars.

Benefits

New exercise equipment can help teachers expand their curriculum, with planning that includes the advantages of outdoor exercise and play. New equipment can also prepare students for after-school activities such as gymnastics, track and contact sports by giving them additional time to learn routines and practice ease of use with equipment.

Exercise

Many middle school gym classes are 50 to 60 minutes long. An hour gives middle school children enough time to burn fat and calories while engaging in physical exercise. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recommends that children get up to 60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis. Having up to an hour each day on exercise equipment can help children easily meet daily exercise recommendations.

Health

Keeping kids active can reap rewards both short and long term. Daily exercise can prevent obesity and help get rid of unwanted pounds brought about by a sedentary lifestyle and poor food choices. Regular exercise may also prevent type 2 diabetes or make type 1 diabetes easier to manage. Staying active with new equipment may also help prevent hypertension, stroke, high blood cholesterol and certain types of cancer.
