Although foods are enjoyable, the primary purpose for eating a balanced, healthy diet is to provide your body with energy. Understanding which types of foods are good sources of energy can help you to plan healthy meals that will give you more energy.

Fruit

Fruit is a helpful food to eat because of the vitamins and minerals they contain. Fruit can be eaten with many meals as an ingredient of a dish or on their own. You can eat practically any fruit as a side with your breakfast or lunch. You can add bananas to your cereal or apples or berries to a salad when you need an added boost. Dried fruit can also be helpful to improve your energy levels when eaten as a snack.

Vegetables

Like fruit, vegetables can be eaten practically any time: at lunch, dinner or as a snack. Vegetables such as bell peppers are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Add them to your salad or cur them in pieces and eat them with hummus. A salad full of vegetables is a healthy choice as long as you keep cheese, meats and dressing at a minimum.

Nuts

Nuts provide a natural source of protein, healthy types and amounts of fat and vitamin E. Add almonds to yogurt for added crunch. Add almonds or walnuts to a salad instead of croutons; or eat a handful as a snack.

Protein

Protein is one of the most important food types to provide your body with energy. Lean cuts of meat, fish, eggs, yogurt, cheese and tofu are all sources of protein. Choose at least one to eat with each meal. For example, you can eat yogurt with breakfast, add turkey and cheese to a sandwich for lunch, and add tofu to a stir-fry for dinner.
