For years companies have been trying to sell shoes to children with the claim that the shoes will help them jump higher and play better. Unfortunately, these types of shoes don't change a jump significantly. The best way for children to jump higher is to practice. Hard work is often the key to building stronger muscles and achieving your exercise goals.

Shoes

A new shoe developed by Athletic Propulsion Labs claims to increase a teenager's jump by 3 inches, according to The Hoop Doctors. This shoe contains a shank that runs alongside the sole of the shoe, adds elasticity and helps your teenager jump higher. Furthermore, the shoe also contains a metal spring, which aids your child's jumping abilities, according to sportslllustrated.com -- but despite the ergonomics that goes into the shoe, your child's ability to jump higher changes only slightly.

Plyometrics

One intense program that can help your child increase his jumping height focuses on plyometrics, which includes working on explosive movements from the lower body and building strength in the upper body and lower body. A program like this can last up to 10 weeks and helps youth players improve their jumping abilities. The program consists of two workouts a week. While no guarantees are made, this program builds strength and can improve jumping abilities in children who work hard.

Lose Weight

Weight plays a huge factor in helping you jump higher. Once you have propelled yourself into the air, the weight of the object causes it to fall quicker, according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. So, if your child can alter his weight by either changing his clothes or losing weight then he will be able to jump higher.

Jump Rope

Jumping rope is a great way to improve speed, agility and muscles so that your child can jump higher. Children can start out slowly and jump at their own speed, and soon they will want to pick up the pace and start jumping faster. According to Vertical Jump Training, the best type of rope to use is a speed rope, although any will do the trick.
