Heart rate monitors are a popular device among everyday exercisers and athletes. Known for measuring the heart or pulse rate, these monitors help you prepare for a marathon, train for a favorite sport, burn more fat or just get you in better shape and keep your heart healthy. There are certain qualities to take into account when searching for the most accurate heart rate monitors.

History

The first wireless heart rate monitor was conceived in 1977 as a training tool for Finland's National Cross Country Ski Team. The device's chest strap acted as the transmitter, conveying radio signals to the wrist receiver whenever it identified a heartbeat. Those signals then helped to ascertain the individual's heart rate. Today's heart rate monitors are more user-friendly. Most devices are strapless and, in 2005, a sports bra was designed with integrated heart sensors that determine how many times the wearer's heart beats.

Types

Heart rate monitors that strap on slightly beneath the breast are the most accurate because they are close to the heart. Once attached, the transmitter will emit signals to a watch or earphones. Users can set comfortable heart rate boundaries, and they will be warned whenever their pulse registers higher or lower than the established number. In order to guarantee an accurate reading, the device needs to always be in contact with the skin. Pulse-style heart rate monitors are also available. Similar to those found in your doctor's office, these models require you to put your finger on a sensor. The downside to this type of monitor is they do not produce a fixed reading and may, in fact, yield a false reading. Some sports watches function as heart rate monitors, too.

Features

All models display your heart rate, so look for one that has a monitor that is easy to read. It's also good to have a backlight to illuminate the numbers in low lit areas -- and big buttons and controls that are prominently marked. Some heart rate monitor watches are equipped with a global positioning system, or GPS. These devices are typically used while running or cycling to monitor the distance covered and at what speed.

Benefits

Monitoring your heart rate is not only essential for good heart health, it can also make exercising more productive. Wearing a heart rate monitor, for instance, allows you to stay in your "fat burning zone" for your entire workout. Some models will even calculate the number of calories you burn. These monitors can also keep you motivated by showing your progress after each workout.
