Teens face the pressure of fitting in and looking a certain way, which might include weight loss. Other teens who are overweight or obese should lose weight for health reasons. Realistic goals and healthy lifestyle changes can help many teens lose weight without putting their health at risk.

Eat Breakfast

Starting the day with a nutritious breakfast helps a teen's metabolism. Breakfast also supplies energy to keep him going throughout the day. He stays more alert and is better able to handle his responsibilities. Eating a healthy, filling breakfast reduces the urge to binge because hunger is satisfied. For teens who eat breakfast at home, try oatmeal, whole wheat English muffin or scrambled egg whites in a whole wheat tortilla. On-the-go ideas for teens include yogurt, fruit and whole grain cereal.

Pack Food

Teens spend the day at school, and often follow that up with extracurricular activities or jobs. That time away from home leaves a teen open to food temptations that aren't healthy. Packing food to keep on hand provides the teen with a healthy option any time she gets hungry. Schools sometimes offer a salad bar or alternative healthier main dish options. Other times, a packed lunch is the best option to stay. Snacks that keep well such as nuts, healthy trail mixes, fresh fruit, dried fruit and whole wheat crackers work to satisfy hunger throughout the day.

Team Activities

Playing on a sports team gives a teen regular access to physical fitness. School teams are an option, but some teens feel uncomfortable trying out. City recreational leagues offer team sports experience with less competition. Being part of a team provides built-in support, and helps a teen feel like she belongs. This boosts self-esteem and helps the teen continue her weight loss program.

Start a Teen Support Group

Support is a key element in the weight loss process. A teen who creates his own support group is better equipped to deal with difficulties of losing weight. Encourage your teen to organize a group of friends to exercise together or meet regularly to talk about healthy habits. A one-on-one weight loss partner is another option, especially if both teens have similar weight loss goals.
