The South Beach Diet is a popular weight-loss system that features a modified low-carbohydrate menu based on a Mediterranean style of eating. The diet aims to teach dieters healthy food choices to encourage long-term health. However, similar diets exist that use some of the same principles as the South Beach Diet, with subtle differences. Learning about the similarities and differences may help you decide which diet is best for you.

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet comes from the southern coast of Europe, where people naturally consume a diet high in monounsaturated fat and low in saturated fat. The diet emphasizes fish and whole grains and limits sugar and processed foods. The Mediterranean diet is not a commercial diet plan, so no official books or websites promote the diet. The Mediterranean way of eating has been linked to a reduction in cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Sonoma Diet

The Sonoma Diet emphasizes many of the same healthy foods as the South Beach Diet and also uses the Mediterranean style of eating as inspiration. However, the Sonoma Diet focuses on 12 specific foods, such as olive oil and strawberries, as being of particular importance for dieters on the plan. In contrast, the South Beach Diet does not emphasize any particular food or foods other than lean protein, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. The Sonoma Diet also focuses on portion control, which is not a focus of the South Beach Diet.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is one of the original low-carb diet plans and shares this characteristic with the South Beach Diet. The Atkins Diet tends to emphasize much lower carbohydrate intake than the South Beach Diet; therefore, adherence may be difficult. Like the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet is divided into multiple phases, starting with the shortest and most restrictive phase. The first phase is designed to jumpstart weight loss.

Hamptons Diet

The Hamptons Diet is another commercial diet plan based on the Mediterranean style of eating and similar to the South Beach Diet. The Hamptons Diet calls for a lower level of carbohydrate intake than the South Beach Diet. The Hamptons Diet differentiates itself from other low-carbohydrate diets by emphasizing the consumption of macadamia nut oil, which is a monounsaturated oil. The official diet website sells the recommended oil.
