Fishing for catfish is a sport unto itself, as many anglers spend the majority of their angling time searching out one species of catfish or another. Catfish range from less than 1 lb. to over 100 lbs., so there is something for everyone. The blue catfish, sometimes called "bluecat," is one of the larger species of catfish, with the world record catch weighing over 124 lbs.

Identification

The blue catfish bears a resemblance to the channel catfish, because of the pronounced fork in its tail fin. The back of a blue catfish is slate blue in color, gradually fading to white around the belly. Blue catfish prefer water temperatures in the 68 to 80 degree F range.

Diet and Bait

Blue catfish feed mainly at nighttime on frogs, crayfish, mollusks and bigger invertebrates. They use their sense of smell to track down food, and any bait you use that projects a strong smell may catch their attention. Live fish, shiners, night crawlers, prepared and rotting bait, and cut bait are effective, as are frogs or any of their natural diet.

Location

Blue catfish are native to Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi, and can also be found down through Texas and into Mexico and Guatemala. You can usually find blue catfish in larger river systems that feature deep currents and swift channels. They like to hide in hollowed-out logs and various structures that provide security.

Equipment

When fishing for blue catfish, it is wise to use heavier equipment, because if you hook into one of the larger ones, you will never land it on a smaller rod and reel. Use a 7- to 8-foot baitcasting fishing rod with a heavy-duty reel that is set up with a 30- to 50-lb. monofilament or braided fishing line. Large hooks with heavy lead sinkers to patrol the bottom of the lake or river can help you land a big one. Keep a good-sized fishing net on hand, just in case you land a big one and have trouble bringing it in.
