Herbs for Arthritis in Thumbs

Several types of arthritis exist; however, osteoarthritis affect the joint at the base of the thumb the most, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. This joint, located at the base of the thumb, allows the thumb to rotate, enabling you to grip items easily. When this action is difficult, every day tasks can become complicated. Herbs are a natural alternative to medications, helping you to regain movement and ease pain in the affected thumb.

Feverfew

Feverfew is a flowering plant famed among migraine sufferers, because it is widely used for reducing inflammation in the blood vessels, which leads to migraine pain. For centuries, the herb has been a remedy for fevers, stomachaches, toothaches, insect bites and a host of other conditions, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Other uses for feverfew include treating rheumatoid arthritis, making the herb an ideal alternative for those with arthritis in the thumbs. Supplements including tablets, capsules and liquid extracts are available over the counter. No serious side effects are reported; however, mild side effects may include canker sores, swelling and irritation of the tongue, and loss of taste.

Ginger

Ginger, a favorite flavor for breads and Asian dishes, has medicinal value. The tropical plant has been used for centuries to treat nausea and other stomach ailments. In the United States, many digestive, anti-nausea, and cold and flu preparations contain ginger extract, according to the NCCAM. In addition, the herb is a treatment for various types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, making it a remedy for arthritis pain affecting the thumb.

Turmeric
