For football players in regions with tough winters--including snow--finding the right football cleat can be difficult. Snow makes for a tough playing field regardless of whether the field is made of turf or natural grass. Snow can cause players to slip and slide and increase the risk of sustaining and injury. Buying the right football shoes can make a drastic difference in your playing ability.
Football Shoes
Football shoes or cleats are athletic footwear worn during football games and practices. Cleats are designed to give football players more support in the middle of their foot and to protect the ankles from rolling while participating in football. Cleats provide better support as players initiate blocks, take hits and tackle opposing players. Players are able to move quickly and turn sharply during each play.
Cleats
Football cleats come complete with spikes and studs positioned on the button of the cleat. They are designed for traction and can be made of metal, plastic or rubber. Your football shoes may have removable spikes; a special tool is used to remove the cleats from the football shoe. Spikes may also be permanently attached to the bottoms of your football shoes. Removable cleats are most beneficial when playing in the snow. This is because players are able to remove the spikes and change them based on the condition of the field. Molded cleats are ideal for younger players and are suitable for a wide variety of weather conditions on grass fields.
Spike Length
Spikes come in a variety of lengths. Shorter spikes are generally more beneficial when the field is dry. Players are likely to consider longer spikes when the field is wet or snowy. Longer spikes allow for better traction and prevent slippage on a wet field.
Considerations
Your spikes should be checked regularly. If you notice that your spikes have become worn or loose, replace your football shoes, or the spikes if the cleats are detachable. Prior to using your cleats in a game, it is important to wear them in. Playing in a game with new cleats--regardless of weather conditions--can lead to injury and decrease your performance. Avoid walking on concrete with your cleats so you don't wear them out early. You should also check with your league's rules prior to purchasing your cleats. Some organizations may have restrictions on the use of metal cleats or the length of your spikes.
