Side Effects of Zolodex

Zoladex is the brand name of a generic drug called goserelin, which is a synthetic hormone. It is primarily used to treat prostate cancer in men, endometriosis in women and advanced breast cancer in premenopausal and perimenopausal women. A patient is given Zoladex every 28 days in the form of a small implant inserted through a needle and placed under the skin of the upper stomach. As with any medication, Zoladex has the potential for side effects.

According to the National Institutes of Health, common side effects of Zoladex include headaches, weight gain, hot flashes, bone pain, acne, skin rash, breast swelling, breast tenderness, bone pain, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, sleep problems, decreased erections in men, decreased libido in women, vaginitis and mood changes.

Serious Side Effects

Side effects that can be more serious include increased emotions, vomiting, increased amount of body hair, lethargy, vaginal dryness and nausea, as indicated by the FDA. Drugs.com identifies other serious side effects as back pain, severe numbness or tingling in the legs or feet, muscle weakness, problems with balance or coordination, loss of bladder or bowel control, decrease in urination or lack of urinating at all, pain when urinating, burning sensation while urinating, feeling faint, difficulty breathing, pale skin, bruising easily, chest pain, heaviness in the chest, heart rate irregularities, increased thirst, muscle weakness, confusion, or feeling tired or restless.

A patient should seek emergency medical attention if he experiences possible allergic reactions such as chest pain, fever, hives, painful urination, rapid heartbeat, difficult breathing and/or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.

Zoladex can decrease bone mineral density, which can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. Alcohol use and a family history of osteoporosis can increase this risk even more.
