Information on the Nordette 28 Birth Control

Nordette 28 is an oral contraceptive, or birth control pill, that consists of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, which simulate two naturally occurring hormones in the body: estrogen and progesterone.

Function

Nordette 28 is used to help prevent pregnancy. The medication prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus and changes the uterine lining, all of which make it less likely that sperm will reach the uterus and that a fertilized egg will be able to attach to the uterus.

Time Frame

Oral contraceptives are taken daily, one pill per day. Nordette 28 contains 21 active pills, and the last seven pills are "reminder" pills. Your period will start during the reminder pills, and when the last pill is taken, a new pack is started.

Side Effects

Nausea, bloating, breast pain or tenderness, vaginal discharge, changes in weight or appetite and headache can be common side effects of this medication, according to drugs.com.

Considerations

Tell your health care provider about any medical conditions you may have. If you have a history of blood clots, a hormone-related cancer, liver problems or extremely high blood pressure, you should not take this medication.

Warning

Nordette 28 helps prevent pregnancy; it does not help protect you from sexually transmitted infections or HIV/AIDS.
