Provigil is a medication used to treat excessive sleepiness in conditions like sleep apnea, narcolepsy or sleep problems associated with working different shifts. Drugs.com explains that the medication is thought to work by altering the natural chemicals of the brain that would normally cause a person to fall asleep. As with any medication Provigil has the potential for side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
Most individuals experience few, if any, side effects with Provigil. The most common include headaches, dizziness, nervousness or agitation, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia or dry mouth, according to Drugs.com RxList.com identifies several other common side effects of Provigil including nasal infection, congestion, nasal drainage, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea and belching.
Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com warns that individuals should stop Provigil if they experience any serious side effects including fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting with severe blistering or peeling of the skin, red skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness, bruising or bleeding easily, white lesions inside the mouth or on the lips, hallucinations, unusual behavior or thoughts, depression, anxiousness, chest pain or irregular heart beats. RxList.com suggests some side effects to be hypertension, abnormal liver function, excessive thirst, tremors, oral sores including herpes and urine abnormalities.
Allergic Reaction
Some individuals may have sensitivities or allergies to Provigil. The reaction may be mild to severe. Individuals with a severe allergic reactions should seek medical attention. Drugs.com says these reactions may include hives, trouble breathing and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. The skin may take on a blueish hue from lack of oxygen. This can indicate asphyxiation, which is severe and can be life threatening.
