If you have excess weight that lingers around in the abdominal area, your first response is how to target that fat and get rid of it. The abdominal area is a common place for trapped excess belly fat. Some people store fat in the stomach area because of genetics and overall body shape. In some cases, excess belly fat could be an indicator of underlying disease. As you get rid of belly fat, diet and exercise will also trim down other areas on your body, not just your abdominals specifically.

Diet

Even if you are only concerned about your belly, you should follow a healthy diet to reduce your overall body fat and help prevent more fat from forming in the belly. Begin to follow a diet derived from all of the food groups, including whole wheat, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, beans and lean protein. Eat three meals a day with foods from the pyramid; fill up on fresh vegetables and fruits for snacks. Cook lean meats in unsaturated fats and eat carbohydrates in moderation. In some cases, a larger abdomen can indicate you may have pre-diabetes or glucose intolerance. Have your blood sugars tested to determine if your levels are in the normal range. You can follow a diabetic diet that includes reduced sugar intake, low carbohydrate and lean proteins.

Cardio

Getting your heart rate up is one way to lose weight in your abdominal and other areas. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that adults should engage in 30 minutes of moderate to intense cardiovascular activity up to five days a week. This will help keep your metabolism up and help you burn fat throughout the day. Some common cardiovascular exercises that involve the abdominal area include cycling on a road or stationary bike, rowing, power walking and jumping rope.

Strength Training

Strength training can really help you focus on your abdominals as well as burning fat overall. With strength training you can use weights or resistance bands to strengthen and target your stomach area. A fitness machine such as a Total Gym or similar unit that targets abdominal muscles with resistance is another way to see toning results fast in your belly and your entire body.

Abdominal Crunches

A tried-and-true method to target your stomach doesn't involve going to a gym : abdominal crunches. You can do this routine just about anywhere you have a solid and comfortable surface to lie down on. Lie flat on your back and support your neck. Bend your knees and use your abdominals to raise your upper body up into a sitting position. You can also bend legs to one side to help work out your side abdominals or obliques. Repeat 20 times or more a day to bring hidden abdominal muscles back to life and strengthen your lower back.
