Acidophilus for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome can be relieved by using acidophilus, a type of "healthy" bacteria also known as probiotics. These bacteria, which can be found in some foods and supplements, can help soothe many different digestive problems. Because there is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome, treatments which relieve the symptoms are the best approach for managing this condition.

Acidophilus

Acidophilus, also known as lactobacillus acidophilus, is a type of bacteria which is commonly found in probiotic supplements. The digestive tract naturally contains many different bacteria which do not cause any disease because they do not infect or destroy healthy tissue. Instead, these bacteria are actually beneficial because they can crowd out harmful bacteria and can also aid in digestion. Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria can colonize the intestines, MedLinePlus explains, making it a useful probiotic supplement.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition which seems to be caused by muscles in the large intestines contracting more quickly than usual, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains. Researchers don't know what causes irritable bowel syndrome, but it is more common in women and is associated with stress. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, you may experience abdominal pain, gas or bouts of constipation or diarrhea. The intestines of people with irritable bowel syndrome appear healthy and normal.

Acidophilus and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

There is some evidence that consuming more acidophilus bacteria can help relieve some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. In theory, these bacteria can help stabilize the immune system in the intestines and help prevent inflammation, which may serve as a trigger for irritable bowel syndrome. Some studies have shown that probiotic supplements can relieve the constipation, discomfort and gas associated with irritable bowel syndrome, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains.

Dosing

Acidophilus bacteria can be found in yogurt with live cultures and can also be taken in supplement form. If you choose to take Lactobacillus acidophillus supplements, you should consume between one and 10 billion colony forming units, or CFUs, each day, the Mayo Clinic explains. Taking more than this can cause digestive problems but doses less than this can make it hard for the bacteria to colonize your digestive tract. Another option is suppository capsules which are sometimes used to treat diarrhea.
