Betaine HCL is a digestive aid that increases acidity in the stomach. This supplement helps to convert the precursor pepsinogen into the protein-digesting enzyme pepsin. Betaine HCL contains both hydrochloride acid and pepsin to facilitate the digestion of food. Hydrochloride acid also plays key roles in protecting the stomach and intestines against ingested pathogens, bacteria and fungi; stimulating the flow of bile and pancreatic enzymes; and facilitating the absorption of vitamins and minerals. It is important to take Betaine HCL as directed on the label.
Step 1
Purchase Betaine HCL supplements from a healthfood store. Read the label carefully to ensure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in this supplement. Betaine HCL is taken just before you begin eating.
Step 2
Take one capsule of Betaine HCL just before beginning a meal. If you experience any stomach heaviness or burning, consult your doctor and do not continue taking the supplements.
Step 3
Take 2 capsules of Betaine HCL swallowed whole with a glass of water at the beginning of the next meal, if no stomach discomfort was experienced with the first dose. Monitor for any adverse effects such as pain or burning sensations.
Step 4
Take up to three capsules just before beginning the next meal, if there are no adverse side effects. This is the maximum dose for Betaine HCL. Use the supplement for several weeks to several months in order to improve digestive health.
