Pilates is a form of exercise or rehabilitation done in group classes or private sessions. Some classes focus on mat exercises, while others utilize special equipment designed by Joseph Pilates, the man who developed the Pilates system. Classes are commonly found at the gym or a Pilates studio. Pilates is suitable for novice or advanced fitness enthusiasts.

Target Core Muscles

Pilates classes provide exercises for all muscle groups, but the routines emphasize strengthening the core muscles, which include the abdominal, back and hip muscles. Pilates not only strengthens the core muscles, it improves the flexibility and mobility of joints in that area. It also improves abdominal control and pelvic stability, which improves your posture.

Constant State of Awareness

The student has the responsibility to keep a constant state of awareness during a Pilates class. The student must focus to improve the efficiency of her movements and muscle control. She hast to maintain a neutral spine alignment. or the proper posture prescribed for the exercise, throughout the entire set of movements. The student must breathe as instructed to oxygenate the body and promote mental focus.

Special Equipment

A Pilates class commonly focuses on exercises performed on special equipment including the Reformer, the Cadillac and the Barrel. The Reformer, standard in all Pilates classes using equipment, is a contraption made of wood, pulleys, bars and cables. Students stand, sit and lay down on and next to the Reformer to perform various exercises. Expect your Reformer class to have five people or less per instructor. Classes last approximately 50 minutes.

Mat Classes

A mat Pilates class is done on a mat in large or small groups and may or may not include equipment. Equipment for the mat class is small and portable, like an exercise band or an exercise ring called a Magic Circle. The mat class emphasizes increasing the strength and flexibility of the core muscles. A recent fitness trend combines yoga and mat Pilates. Classes last approximately one hour.
