How to Take Kelp for Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is the condition of having an underactive thyroid gland, which can lead to weight gain, fatigue, depression, hair loss, dry skin, muscle cramps, chills and fluid retention. Brown seaweed kelp absorbs iodine from the water it grows in and is therefore rich in iodine. Some researchers believe that kelp supplements can improve the thyroid's ability to function properly, according to "Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies," which is likely due to iodine deficiency having the ability to cause goiters and hypothyroidism. Goiters as a result of iodine deficiency are rare in developed countries. However, too much iodine can also lead to the development of goiters, so it is important that you consult your physician prior to using kelp supplements to treat your hypothyroidism.

Step 1

Visit your doctor to determine the dosage of kelp appropriate for you. Your doctor will have to determine the appropriate dosage of kelp, based on your thyroid levels and current thyroid medication dosage. This is a balancing act that is dangerous to attempt on your own.

Step 2

Take your kelp supplement with a meal or snack. Taking kelp on an empty stomach can lead to abdominal discomfort and nausea. Typically, kelp supplements are only taken once per day.

Step 3

Plan to take your kelp supplement at the same time each day to maintain steady levels of it in your system.

Step 4

Drink at least half of your weight in pounds in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs., drink at least 75 oz. of water each day. In addition to iodine, kelp also contains sodium, which can result in fluid retention. Adequate hydration can counteract this effect.
