Exercise & Premarin

Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and fertility in women. According to the Mayo Clinic, menopause is a natural body process that can sap your energy, disrupt your sleep and make you feel depressed. Premarin is a hormone therapy drug designed to fight the symptoms of menopause. In conjunction with exercise, Premarin can help keep women healthy and fight the complications that can come with menopause.

Premarin

Premarin is a hormone therapy drug that is taken via the vagina. The drug comes in three forms: a vaginal ring, vaginal tables and a vaginal cream. According to the Premarin website, the drug is designed for women who have moderate to severe menopausal symptoms that include hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. The company website also notes that the drug is designed for women who have had a hysterectomy or removal of their uterus. However, the drug can be used in combination with other drugs for women with a uterus.

Menopause and Complications

In addition to the hormone-related problems menopause can cause such as sleep issues, lack of energy and depression, more serious health problems can arise because of menopause. Estrogen levels decrease the risk for complications such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and weight gain. Due to decreased estrogen levels, during the first few years of menopause you may lose bone density at a rapid rate, which can lead to brittle bones and an increased risk for fractures. Postmenopausal women are especially susceptible to fractures of the hip, wrist and spine.

Exercising with Menopause

Exercising is one of the best ways to fight the symptoms and complications of menopause. The Mayo Clinic advises you to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical exercise every day. Moderate-intensity exercise means that you are working hard enough to get your heart rate up, but you are still able to talk. The Mayo Clinic advises activities like walking, jogging and strength training to keep your bones strong. Exercise can help fight stress; yoga in particular is effective in reducing hot flashes in some women.

Exercising on Premarin

Exercising while taking Premarin is safe and can help you reap the benefits of both since adding exercise to your routine can further help the drug strengthen your bones and fight serious diseases. According to the Premarin website, exercise should be a part of your overall wellness plan while taking the drug. None of the listed side effects of Premarin have anything to do with exercise, so any problems from exercising should be considered serious and reported to your doctor.
