How to Stop Shingles Pain

Shingles refers to a viral infection that most commonly results in a blister formation from your back to your breastbone, according to the Mayo Clinic. The varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chicken pox) is to blame for this painful rash. People with shingles may also develop fever, chills, stomach pain and vision problems. If you suffer from shingles, there are specific ways to stop its pain.

Step 1

Apply a cold compress to your painful rash for 20 minutes at a time. Do this frequently throughout the day and this can help stop your shingles pain. The Mayo Clinic also recommends taking a cold shower to ease your shingles pain.

Step 2

Relax and avoid stressful situations and activities, as these can worsen your pain. Meditate and focus on your breathing. Imagine a calm place or do something you enjoy. The Mayo Clinic states that this can distract you from your pain.

Step 3

Try a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Read the instructions on the package and take as directed.

Step 4

Obtain a prescription for a narcotic such as oxycodone, a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptylene, an anticonvulsant such as gabapentin, or a topical anesthetic such as lidocaine. Use these medications as your doctor recommends to stop your shingles pain.
