Lifting weights has many health benefits. It burns calories and increases both muscle mass and bone density. Whether you want to compete in bodybuilding shows or just want to increase strength and appearance, a bodybuilding workout is a valuable addition to any fitness program. It is important to invest the time in working out properly, using correct form and allowing your body to progress gradually. Lifting heavy weights too soon, or expecting overnight results are a sure recipe for injury and disappointment.
Step 1
Decide on the right plan--there are many different bodybuilding workouts from which to choose. The general rule is to allow your body 48 hours of rest between workouts. Some people choose to work out daily, rotating the body parts they exercise, and others choose to complete a full body workout every other day.
Step 2
Gather the proper equipment. It is possible to develop an effective weight lifting program at your home. Buying in dumbbells and a bench allow you to complete many good bodybuilding exercises. Access to a gym will provide more options, such as a squat rack and cable machine.
Step 3
Consider working out with a friend. A friend provides motivation and safety. Having someone with you that can help you wrangle a weight that gets out of control will give you confidence when adding weight.
Step 4
Be consistent. It may take several months for noticeable changes to occur in your physique. Do not get discouraged, just keep exercising and increasing the amount of weight you are lifting. You will soon be able to see changes, typically in the smaller muscles such as the arms and shoulders, and then the chest, legs and back.
Step 5
Start slowly. Spend the first several weight training sessions using very light weights. The purpose of these sessions is to learn each move and perfect your form. Any time you add a new exercise, complete it several times without added weight. Completing an exercise improperly is an easy way to develop an injury.
Tips and Warnings
- Watch what you eat, it's hard to see muscle under a layer of fat.
