Sinusitis is a condition in which the hollow spaces around your eyes, nose and cheeks become irritated and inflamed. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that sinusitis is a common condition, affecting about 30 million Americans every year. There are three principle types of sinusitis -- acute, chronic and recurrent. Herbal remedies are an often safe and effective ways to treat sinusitis, although you should always talk with your health-care provider before using them.
Sinusitis Symptoms
Sinusitis symptoms are similar for both acute and chronic sinusitis. MayoClinic.com says that some of the most common symptoms associated with sinusitis include thick nasal discharge that is green or yellow, congestion in your nasal passages, difficult nose breathing, pain, pressure or tenderness around your sinuses, jaw and tooth discomfort, reduced smell and taste sensation and a cough that is usually worse at night. You may also experience headache, sore throat and bad breath.
Botanical Medicines
Numerous botanical, or herbal, medicines have been used in treating sinusitis. Herbalist and naturopathic physician William A. Mitchell Jr., author of "Plant Medicine in Practice," says that two of the most helpful botanical medicines for sinusitis are stinging nettle and horseradish. Other beneficial herbs in treating this condition include herbs that reduce nasal congestion, such as anise and fenugreek. Herbs such as olive leaf and mullein possess anti-inflammatory action and help soothe your irritated mucus membranes.
Featured Botanical
Stinging nettle is one of the most commonly prescribed botanical remedies for sinusitis. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center says that stinging nettle is used for numerous health problems, including allergies, inflammation, chest congestion and urinary tract conditions. Stinging nettle helps regulate your allergic response, and it possesses anti-inflammatory and antihistamine action. This botanical medicine helps heal mucus membrane ulcerations and eruptions and rashes on your skin. This herb may be used both internally and externally, depending on the condition being treated.
Considerations
Although herbal remedies have long been used in treating sinusitis, a common condition, it is always wise to discuss herbs and their health ramifications with a knowledgeable health-care provider beforehand. For the most accurate and relevant information about herbal remedies and their health effects, visit a licensed naturopathic physician or a medical doctor who has received extensive training in botanical medicine. Because sinusitis can lead to health complications, schedule an appointment with your health-care provider when your sinusitis symptoms first appear.
