Valentine's Day is known for sugary sweets and chocolate, but you can opt to serve your kids healthy Valentine's Day treats. Easy to prepare nutrient-dense snacks can display the holiday's traditional themes. Shape and color healthy foods to fit the Valentine's Day theme and serve up a "hearty" snack for your kids.
Strawberries
Strawberries alone make a simple and healthy Valentine's Day snack. Strawberries are red and come naturally in a heart-shaped form, making it easy for them to fit in with the Valentine's Day theme. Use whole strawberries that still have the stems attached, to make them slightly different than cut up strawberries you might normally serve your kids.
To sweeten things up for the holiday, add chocolate. Dip the tips of each strawberry into melted dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains healthier nutrients than milk chocolate. With or without the chocolate, strawberries as a Valentine's Day treat make a low-calorie, nutrient-dense snack.
Heart Pancakes
Serve small heart-shaped whole grain pancakes as a healthy Valentine's snack. Use a whole grain pancake mix. Whole grains contain considerably more fiber and other vitamins and minerals than refined grains, which have been stripped of these nutrients. Add red food coloring to the mix if you wish. After they're cooked, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to create heart pancakes. Puree red berries to serve on top of the pancakes, to add more vitamins and minerals to the snack.
Pink Smoothies
Serve a pink fruit smoothie as a healthy Valentine's Day snack. In a food processor, blend together a 1/2 cup of pomegranate juice, a cup of strawberries, a 1/2 cup of raspberries, a cup of strawberry yogurt and a whole banana. Add some soy milk to decrease the thickness of the smoothies. Pour the blended smoothies into clear glass cups and garnish with strawberries. This smoothie provides rich amounts of antioxidants, fiber and other healthy vitamins and minerals.
Valentine's Kabob
Cut thick slices of strawberries, so each slice forms the shape of a heart.
Slice a banana into circular slices. Slide the fruit slices into a kabob stick, alternating between banana slices and strawberry slices. Add some blackberries to the kabob for purple color. This kabob will help your kids get their daily servings of fruit and healthy amounts of fiber.
