Pilates, a practice invented by Joseph Pilates, is a means to strengthen and stretch the core muscles and improve flexibility. The exercises can be performed on a mat or on a Pilates machine, such as a Reformer or Cadillac. Because Pilates is gentle on the joints, it is suitable for almost all body types and levels of health. In addition to the physical benefits of Pilates, it also is considered a mentally relaxing practice as you must focus on your breathing to see success.
Pilates History
Inventor Joseph Pilates was born with several debilitating conditions, including asthma and others that left him weak. He overcame these challenges, even engaging in sports and other athletic activities. He used these skills, as well as his knowledge of conditions that could keep a person from exercising, to create his exercise methods. He then put them to use during his work as a World War I nurse in Great Britain. The exercises were designed to help wounded soldiers to retain strength while they were immobilized.
Ways to Start
There are a number of ways to begin a Pilates practice, even if you have never performed Pilates exercises before. The first is by taking a Pilates class or individual instructional session from a certified Pilates instructor. This can be especially helpful to those who have never performed Pialtes, as they can receive instruction on proper form. Another option is purchasing a Pilates DVD or video for beginners, as instructors visually demonstrate exercises. The Internet and books also are useful tools for illustrating basic moves.
Basic Moves
Pilates features a variety of exercises to strengthen the core muscles. These include the hundred, the saw, the cancan, the bicycle and the roll-up. All of these exercises can be performed on a mat.
Benefits
In addition to the mental benefits of relaxation and improved focus, Pilates also provides many benefits to the body. These include improved strength in the core--stomach, lower back and obliques. This helps provide extra stability and balance in the body as well as prevent injuries.
Tips for Success
Pilates is a forgiving set of exercises that allows the practitioner to make adjustments based on skill level. Remember to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, yet does not ride or fly up on inverted poses. Also make an effort to make the movements fluid and even--Pilates is not a practice for jerky movements--instead, use gentle, flowing exercises.
