5-hydroxytryptophan, commonly known as 5-HTP, is a chemical that is derived from an essential amino acid tryptophan, which is obtained through dietary protein. In the body, 5-HTP is converted to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that helps promote normal brain and neuron function. For this reason, 5-HTP is used to treat bipolar disorders, insomnia, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches and obesity. Consult to your doctor before taking 5-HTP supplements.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by the periods of elevated energy levels, mood, and cognition with or without the periods of depression. According to the University of Michigan, 5-HTP supplements may have antidepressant effects in people with bipolar disorder. One double-blind study showed an improvement in patients who took 300mg of 5-HTP daily in combination with an antidepressant drug.

Insomnia

Insomnia is difficulty staying asleep or getting to sleep. 5-HTP helps promote good sleep without a hangover or drugged feeling, which is usually present with sleeping pills. In one study, people who took 5-HTP supplement experienced deeper sleep and went to sleep quicker than those taking placebo. Researchers recommend that a dosage between 200 to 400mg of 5-HTP at night effectively reduces symptoms of insomnia.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome in which people experience muscle pain, fatigue, morning stiffness and tender points on various parts of the body. According to the New York University Langone Medical Center, 5-HTP may reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia. One double-blind study found that people who took 300mg of 5-HTP for 30 days experienced less tender points and the amount of pain than those taking placebo. Patients also showed improvements in morning stiffness and fatigue.

Weight Loss

5-HTP may also help people lose weight. One study found that people who took 5-HTP ate fewer calories compared to those taking placebo. Researchers found that 5-HTP reduces the food craving, which in turn reduces calorie intake and increases weight loss. However, high dose of 5-HTP can be toxic to brain. So, consult your doctor before taking 5-HTP supplements.
