Mucus, Sinusitis, Cough & Herbs

Sinusitis and coughing with mucus production can be related to a number of ailments including allergies, colds and flu. These upper respiratory symptoms are often viral and do not respond to antibiotic treatment; however, many herbal remedies may reduce symptoms and make you feel better during recovery. Many herbs produce side effects. If you use herbal remedies, contact your health practitioner before doing so to ensure you are taking the correct treatment for your condition.

White Horehound

White horehound is used as an expectorant to loosen congestion in the chest and relieve a dry cough. In addition, it is an anti-inflammatory used to relieve bronchitis and coughing related to asthma. It relieves pain during coughing and soothes the digestive tract. White horehound was often combined with honey and other substances into a lozenge made for sucking to relieve sore throats and coughing. Horehound lozenges are available from some health food stores and online. Other ways to use this herb are in herbal teas and mixed in herbal tonics. Consult your health practitioner for dosing guidelines.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek acts as an expectorant to loosen tightness in the airways and help dry up productive coughing. This herb may also relieve sinusitis due to its astringent properties, helping to dry up post nasal drip. Fenugreek may be especially useful in the treatment of allergic rhinitis with accompanying symptoms of cough and sinus congestion. Consult an herbal specialist for dosing guidelines before using fenugreek.

Willow Bark

Willow bark is the source of the chemical used to manufacture salicylic acid, or aspirin. Willow is a traditional Native American herb used for the treatment of colds, flu and fever. Its properties may make it helpful for reducing pain from sinus headaches and chest pain resulting from coughing. People allergic to aspirin should not take any herbs containing willow bark. Before using this herb, speak with your health practitioner.

Licorice Root

Licorice root may offer relief from coughing and sore throat due to sickness or allergies. Its properties include stimulating the body to create a protective mucus film that prevents damage to membranes in the throat, airways and digestive tract. In particular, licorice root may relieve pain from heartburn during coughing episodes where vomiting may occur. Licorice root is most often administered as an herbal tea. It may raise the blood pressure in sensitive individuals when used over a long period. The occasional cup of herb tea should not be a problem; however, contact your health practitioner before using it to make sure it is safe for you.

Horseradish Root

Horseradish reduces congestion from sinusitis, clearing the sinuses and nasal passages. Horseradish has properties allowing it to act as an astringent to dry up excess mucus and reduce swelling in mucus membranes. A piece of horseradish root can simply be sniffed to help clear stuffy sinuses or you can make a paste and eat it. Use caution because some pieces of horseradish are very hot when they are fresh and can cause choking.
