Natural Depression Supplement

Depression is a condition that can significantly impact your enjoyment of social and personal activities, as well as work or school performance. Although symptoms vary from person to person, they typically include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, lethargy, sleep disturbances, concentration difficulties and appetite changes. Although a supplement regimen may not cure depression, it may help relieve symptoms. Check with your physician before designing a supplement regimen to treat depression symptoms.

Vitamin C

When used as part of a supplement regimen, vitamin C may help relieve the symptoms of depression. This vitamin has a calming effect on the nervous system, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." This vitamin is also an immune system enhancer and an antioxidant. Stress and depression may weaken your immune system, but vitamin C may help prevent illnesses and disease caused by viruses, fungi, free radical molecules and bacteria during depressive episodes.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort has been used as an herbal supplement for more than 2,000 years -- ancient Greeks and Romans used this herb to speed the healing of wounds, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The New Healing Herbs." However, St. John's wort may also benefit people with depression. This herb contains a chemical compound called hyperacin, which inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidase chemicals in your body. Monoamine oxidase may contribute to depressive symptoms. Talk to your doctor before using St. John's wort as part of a depression supplement regimen -- it may cause blood pressure fluctuations.

Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid, commonly known as vitamin B-5, is known for its anti-stress and antidepressive properties. This vitamin stimulates the production of serotonin in your brain, according to Balch. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter chemical that may help elevate mood and alleviate physical and mental stress. Pantothenic acid may also help your body metabolize proteins and carbohydrates efficiently, increasing energy available for proper brain function and avoidance of fatigue.

Calcium

Calcium is most closely associated with the maintenance of strong teeth and bones; however, it may also offer anti-depressive benefits when used as part of a supplement regimen. This mineral may help support proper brain function and stimulate the production of anti-stress hormones. It may also have a calming effect on your central nervous system, according to Balch.
