Weight loss is a process that requires hard work and persistence. Engaging in a weight loss program for a month is an excellent way to shed significant pounds and make important lifestyle changes. The amount of weight you can lose in a month will depend on your dietary changes and exercise program.

Rate

Fast, healthy weight loss is limited to 2 lbs. per week, according to MedlinePlus. In the average month, this means you could lose slightly over 8 lbs. There are some radical diets and weight loss techniques that can contribute to faster weight loss, but they are neither safe or healthy. Weight loss of more than 3 lbs. per week can lead to the production of gallstones, and often involves vitamin and nutrient deficiencies from starvation techniques.

Diet

Diet is the most powerful tool for losing the most amount of weight in one month. Your body will burn calories from fat and shed pounds as long as you eat less food than your body needs, creating a calorie deficit. Reducing your daily caloric intake by 500 calories per day will result in losing 1 lb. per week on diet alone. Reducing your diet by 1,000 calories per day through a combination of eating fewer calories and burning more calories through exercise will result in loss of 2 lbs. per week. Keep in mind that the lowest daily caloric intake recommended for women is 1,200 calories and 1,500 calories for men.

Exercise

Exercise can help you burn calories from fat, resulting in increased weight loss. Aerobic exercise is preferred for weight loss because it burns calories from fat at a higher percentage, when compared to other types of activities. Aerobic exercise includes any moderate intensity activity that you sustain for at least 20 minutes. Examples of common aerobic activities are swimming, jogging and cycling. Exercise at least three to five times per week for significant weight loss benefits.

Considerations

Setting a goal for weight loss in one month is a great way to motivate yourself to diet and exercise. Besides choosing a time frame, decide on how much weight you want to lose in that month, based on known healthy rates of weight loss. Always talk to your doctor before starting any new diet plan or exercise program. Consider fun ways to make dieting and exercise more enjoyable. For example, take a cooking class devoted to creating light healthy meals or enroll in a exercise class at your local gym.
