What are the Side Effects Cefuroxime?

Cefuroxime, also known as Ceftin, is a member of the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. Ceftin is prescribed for mild or moderate bacterial infections, and it can also be used to treat gonorrhea and early stage Lyme disease. However, if you are allergic to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics it is recommended that you speak with your doctor before taking Ceftin to avoid a potentially dangerous allergic reaction.

Allergy-Related Side Effects

If you are allergic to Ceftin you may experience side effects similar to those encountered with penicillin allergies. They include hives, difficulty breathing, an increased heart rate and rash, according to The Mayo Clinic. Call your doctor or go to an emergency room immediately.

More Common Side Effects

Several common side effects of Ceftin include fever, body stiffness, diarrhea, headache and painful intercourse, according to PDR Health. Some of these are more serious than others, but if any persist you should contact your physician.

Less Common Side Effects

When taking Ceftin there is a rare chance that you may experience vomiting, yellowing of the skin, blisters in your mouth or on your eyes and changes to your sense of taste according to The Mayo Clinic. Children taking Ceftin may also get diaper rash. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen contact your physician.
