Zanaflex (tizanidine) is a muscle relaxant prescribed to treat muscle cramps, spasms or tightness by blocking nerve signals from the spinal cord to the brain. This medication is a short-acting muscle relaxant; that is, drug effects will occur from 1 to 6 hours after taking the prescribed dose. The side effects are similar for both tablet and capsule forms; however the forms are not interchangeable. Patients should take only the type prescribed by their physician.
Gastrointestinal
Several common gastric side effects of Zanaflex have been documented. These side effects may include stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, or indigestion. Other possible side effects in this category are diarrhea, constipation and dry mouth.
Drowsiness
Zanaflex possibly may produce sedative-like symptoms. For example, drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness may occur. Other potential side effects are feeling weak or fatigued.
Psychological
In certain cases, this medication may be associated with feelings of nervousness and anxiety as well as depression or hallucinations. Additionally, tingling and/or numbness may be experienced in the extremities, along with confusion, blurred vision and speech problems.
Other
In rare cases, major side effects may present, such as slow or irregular heartbeat and hypotension (lowered blood pressure). Other rare side effects include liver injury symptoms (for example, jaundice) as well as unusual bleeding or bruising. Black stools also have been reported. The potential also is present for frequent urination or painful urination and dark urine. If any of these signs present, seek medical attention immediately.
