Caffeine Migraine Treatments

Migraine headaches affect more than 25.9 million Americans, most often women, according to the National Headache Foundation. Treatment for these debilitating headaches ranges from prescription pain relievers and prevention medications to herbal remedies, ice packs, headache rubs and a host of other options. Some of these medications offer relief with caffeine, which is a central nervous stimulant.

Excedrin Migraine

Excedrin is a widely used over-the-counter medication for headache relief. Newer versions of the medication are formulated for migraine sufferers, combining pain relievers like acetaminophen and aspirin with caffeine, to combat more severe pain associated with migraine headaches. Acetaminophen works to reduce pain and reduce fever, and aspirin is effective at decreasing substances in the body that cause pain, fever and inflammation, according to Drugs.com. The addition of caffeine may improve the drug's effectiveness by relaxing muscle contractions and improving blood flow.

Wigraine

Wigraine, also known as Cafergot or Migergot, is a prescription medication used for the treatment of migraine headaches. The drug is available in suppository and tablet formulations. The combination of ergotamine and caffeine present in the medication works by narrowing inflamed blood vessels responsible for migraine pain. The medication is not effective for preventing a migraine, however. The drug should be taken at the first signs of a migraine or at the onset of the headache. In addition, consumption of grapefruit or grapefruit juice with the drug can cause potentially serious side effects.

Norgesic

Norgesic, a prescription medication for the treatment of migraine and other pain-related conditions, combines aspirin, orphenadrine and caffeine. Orphenadrine, a muscle relaxant, works by blocking pain sensations that are sent to the brain. The drug should be used with caution, however, as dizziness and drowsiness can occur, making driving or other tasks requiring focus dangerous. In addition, drinking alcohol with the drug can increase these effects.

Fiorinal

Fiorinal is a prescription medication used for migraines. The drug combines aspirin, caffeine and butalbital, a drug used to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Several other drugs may interact with this medication, including other pain medicines, oral contraceptives and sleep aides, making the medication unsuitable for some individuals.
