Hockey lends itself to variations and games that teach players the fundamentals of the sport. Hockey games fit into a P.E. unit on the sport or during hockey practice. A game-type approach to teaching hockey skills provides the kids with a laid-back, enjoyable activity.

Scooter Hockey

Gym scooters serve as the base for players in this version of floor hockey. Each player sits on his own scooter and holds a special hockey stick that is shortened to accommodate the seated playing position. The players maneuver around the playing area on the scooters with their feet and hands. The rules for the actual hockey play remain the same as standing floor hockey. Players use the shortened sticks to move the puck down the floor to the opposing team's goal.

Hockey Keep Away

Each player needs her own hockey stick and puck for this game. Identify at least two players who are "it" for the start of the game. The "it" players have a stick but no puck. Set up cones to define the playing area. The lines on a gym floor also work to indicate the boundaries. When the game begins, the players with pucks move them around the floor within the boundaries. The "it" players attempt to steal away the pucks from the other players. The game focuses on control and being aware of opposing players to keep the puck in your possession.

Hockey Golf

This hockey game borrows aspects of golf to practice hitting the puck into the goal. Mark several shooting points around a hockey goal. Players place a puck on the first point and attempt to hit it into the goal. If a player doesn't make it on the first attempt, he continues hitting the puck until he makes it. The number of hits it takes him to score the goal is his score for the round. This continues until the players shoot from all of the predetermined points. The player who scores the lowest on all shots wins. For larger groups, set up several goals and divide the kids so they don't have to wait as long.

Hockey Obstacle Course

An obstacle course with hockey sticks and pucks helps the players learn control and agility. Set up cones, mats and other obstacles around the playing area. Each player moves her puck through the obstacles using her hockey stick. At the end of the obstacle course, have the players hit their pucks into a hockey goal. The player with the fastest time through the course wins.
