Whether you travel by car, plane or cruise ship, plenty of unhealthy choices tempt you into abandoning your weight-loss plan. Giving in to the vacation temptations derails the weight loss you achieved in preparation for the trip. A balance between vacation indulgences and healthy choices allows you to enjoy the trip without gaining back all the weight you've already lost.

Scheduling

A general schedule for your vacation keeps you on track and helps you stay in a routine. This makes healthier choices easier while you are away from home. A full night's sleep keeps you rested and ready to enjoy your vacation. The sleep also enables you to make healthy food choices and stay active during the daytime hours.

Plan out the major activities during each day to avoid long sedentary periods. Include physical activity, either in the form of a workout routine or an active outing. Regularly-scheduled meals and snack times give you the fuel and nutrients necessary while preventing overeating.

Dietary Choices

Buffet lines, restaurant dining and convenience stores while on the road create dietary temptations that can cause overeating and high calorie consumption. This excessive eating makes it difficult to maintain or lose weight.

Plan out your meals and snacks ahead of time to stay on track with weight loss. Instead of indulging in an appetizer, high-calorie meal and dessert, choose one area as a splurge. Splitting food with your travel mates also allows you to get a taste of less healthy options without completely throwing your diet aside. Pack your own snacks so you don't have to rely on convenience stores.

Active Vacations

An active vacation combines physical fitness with sightseeing to help you lose or maintain weight while on vacation. The physical activity also helps burn off any extra calories you consume during the trip. Most destinations offer a variety of active options, including sports, cycling, swimming and walking to explore the sights of the destination. Using a recreational activity as your exercise makes it more interesting than hitting the hotel gym, which isn't usually appealing when you're on vacation.

Tips

Avoid the trap of thinking that vacation means you can take a break from everything, including healthy lifestyle choices. The vacation itself provides a break from your everyday responsibilities. Enjoyment is possible even when you continue with healthy eating and exercise.

Understanding the weight-loss difficulties awaiting you on vacation allows you to prepare for dealing with them. One bad meal or day on vacation doesn't mean the end of your weight-loss efforts. Get back on track at the next meal.
