Zinc Overdose Signs

Zinc is a vital element that the body needs to create enzymes that carry out various bodily chemical reactions. The food sources of zinc are numerous as well as a variety of dietary supplements. According to MayoClinic.com, the average adult female should have a zinc intake of 12 mg while an adult male should be getting 15 mg. Overdose becomes possible when more than 40 mg. are consumed.

Gastrointestinal

Consuming too much zinc can cause gastrointestinal complications such as nausea and vomiting. You may also experience diarrhea or constipation, depending upon how your body reacts to the overdose. Fatigue and general weakness may also accompany these conditions, especially if the gastrointestinal side effects are severe.

Jaundice

Jaundice is another possible symptom of a zinc overdose. Jaundice causes your eyes, mucus membranes or skin to take on a yellow pigmentation. The yellowing is brought on by bilirubin, which comes from old red blood cells. According to MedlinePlus, approximately 1 percent of your blood cells are replaced by fresh red blood cells on a daily basis. The retired cells go to the liver, where they are disposed of. The bilirubin is the substance left over that is normally excreted through your stool. Jaundice occurs when there is a buildup of bilirubin in your body. In the case of a zinc overdose, the buildup is the result of your liver being damaged.

Shortness of Breath

A zinc overdose may cause a shortness of breath. This feeling can range from a tightening in your chest to not being able to get sufficient amounts of air. When you are short of breath, you may begin to breathe at a rapid pace, use the muscles in your chest and neck to breathe, be unable to speak or purse your lips when you breathe. You may also experience dizziness that can lead to fainting or passing out. If you experience shortness of breath, call your doctor for advice. If you find yourself unable to speak more than a couple words between each of your breaths, call 911 for assistance.

Suppressed Immune System

Overdosing on zinc may cause your immune system to become weakened, according to the American Cancer Society. This causes you to be at a greater risk of contracting certain infections, such as urinary tract infection. Men who are exposed to large amounts of zinc are also at a greater risk to develop prostate cancer.
