Chronic sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses that lasts 12 weeks or longer despite treatment attempts. Sinusitis is mainly caused by an infection caused by a virus, fungus or bacteria. Healthy sinuses are clear and allow mucus to drain and air to circulate in the nasal passages. Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses become blocked resulting in mucus buildup, which encourages the growth of microorganisms. A vitamin D deficiency does not cause sinusitis.
Chronic Sinusitis and Vitamin D Deficiency
Chronic sinusitis is an infection that occurs when the sinuses become blocked or congested leading to microorganisms growth in the sinuses. A vitamin D deficiency does not cause chronic sinusitis. Vitamin D is necessary for the formation and maintenance of strong bones. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Natural sources of vitamin D include fortified milk, cod liver oil, fish and eggs. Exposure to sunlight also helps the body produce vitamin D.
Symptoms and Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency
Patients with vitamin D deficiency experience symptoms, such as bone tenderness and pain, delayed formation of teeth, holes in the enamel of the teeth, dental caries, loss of muscle strength, increased bone fractures, impaired growth, bowlegs, short stature, breastbone that is pushed forward, pelvic deformities, scoliosis and bumps in the ribcage. Vitamin D deficiency is treated using vitamin D, calcium and phosphorous supplements. Patients are also encouraged to get regular sun exposure.
Symptoms and Treatment of Chronic Sinusitis
Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include nasal congestion, greenish yellowish nasal discharge, loss of sense of smell, fever, facial pressure and pain, persistent cough that worsens at night, ear pain, ringing in the ears, bad breath, toothache, fatigue and malaise. Chronic sinusitis is treated using antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants, nasal corticosteroids and pain medications. Saline nasal irrigation is also recommended to clear mucus buildup.
Prevention of Chronic Sinusitis
Patients can prevent sinusitis by washing hands regularly, especially after shaking hands. Allergies symptoms and upper respiratory infections should be treated early enough so that infections do not spread to the sinuses. Patients should also drink plenty of liquids so as to loosen mucus buildup. Use of a humidifier is also recommended for patients who sleep in rooms with dry air. Elevating the head of the bed before sleeping helps prevent congestion and mucus buildup in the sinuses.
