What Equipment Do You Need for Yoga?

Yoga practice is an excellent way for individuals to relax and ease stress while working on their flexibility and balance. Essentially, yoga can be practiced anywhere and anytime; however, a quiet, serene environment is preferable. No equipment is absolutely required to practice yoga; however, there are several pieces of equipment that can be beneficial, especially for those just beginning yoga.

Clothing

Clothing choices for yoga practice should be comfortable and allow free movement. They should be loose but not so much so that they inhibit movement. Shorts are often preferred so that individuals can pay attention to their knee position during practice. Dressing in layers is often recommended, especially for beginners. This allows individuals to remain comfortable if their body temperature rises. Socks can be worn if preferred, however yoga is generally practiced barefoot.

Mats

Mats are the most commonly used piece of yoga equipment. Yoga mats help provide a comfortable surface for yoga practice. This is especially beneficial if the floor surface is made of cement, hardwood or another uncomfortable material. Mats also help with stability during practice. They inhibit sliding, especially if practicing while wearing socks, and help maintain proper posture and poses. Yoga mats are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They range in price and can be found at several retail stores.

Blocks

Foam blocks are simple pieces of equipment but can be extremely beneficial, especially for beginners. Blocks are used to help individuals extend their reach. For example, if someone cannot reach the floor during a particular pose, a block can be used between the floor and the person's hand to fill the gap. This allows for yoga poses to be reached and maintained properly without sacrificing posture or risking injury.

Straps

Yoga straps are generally made of cotton or strong nylon. These straps serve the same basic function as yoga blocks. They are used to extend the individual's reach and help her maintain yoga poses more effectively. Straps can be secured around the feet or hands to help bridge any gaps that may be present during particular poses. Yoga straps can be helpful for yoga novices. As an individual makes advances in her yoga practice, she may be able to use the straps less or eliminate their use completely.
