Former head football coach Don Shula has appeared in the most super bowls, as a head football coach. As the Colts head coach he lost Super Bowl III vs the New York Jets. In 1971, as the Miami Dolphins head coach, he lost to the Dallas Cowboys. Shula won back-to-back Super Bowls for the 1972 and 1973 seasons with the Dolphins. Shula lost his last two Super Bowls in 1982 and 1984 with the Dolphins.
Super Bowl III
In Super Bowl III Don Shula led his Baltimore Colts team into the Miami Orange Bowl to play the New York Jets. Despite being a favorite to win the game, the Colts lost 16-7. Jets Quarterback Joe Namath won the Most Valuable Player Award. Namath threw for 206 yards. The Colts offense played poorly throwing a combined four interceptions.
Super Bowl VI
In Super Bowl VI Don Shula coached the Miami Dolphins and led them to the franchises first super bowl. Shula and the Dolphins struggled and lost to the Dallas Cowboys 24-3. The Dolphins struggled on both offense and defense allowing the Cowboys to have 352 yards of total offense.
Super Bowl VII
Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins into Super Bowl VII with a perfect record of 16 wins and no losses. The Dolphins played the Washington Redskins and defeated them 14-7. The win clinched an undefeated season for the Dolphins. Defense played a big role in the super bowl victory. The Dolphins defense held the Redskins to a season low seven points.
Super Bowl VIII
The Miami Dolphins and Coach Shula won their second straight Super Bowl in the 1973-74 season. The Dolphins won Super Bowl VIII by defeating the Minnesota Vikings 24-7. The Dolphins had much success in their running game and defense. Dolphin running back Larry Csonka had 145 yards rushing, and won the Most Valuable Player Award.
Super Bowl XVII
Don Shula and the Dolphins returned to the Super Bowl in the 1982 season. The Dolphins lost Super Bowl XVII to the Washington Redskins 21-17. The Dolphins had trouble tackling Redskins Running back John Riggins. Riggins had 38 carries for 166 yards. Riggins was the games Most Valuable Player.
Super Bowl XIX
Super Bowl XIX was Coach Shula's last Super Bowl appearance. The Dolphins played the San Francisco 49ers and were defeated 38-16. The Dolphins defense had trouble stopping 49er Quarterback Joe Montana. Montana threw for for three touchdown passes and ran for one. The 49er defense shut down Miami quarterback Dan Marino, holding him to only one touchdown pass, and intercepting him twice.
