1. Best Bet for MS Patients

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the myelin cells in the central nervous system. It is believed that about 5 percent of northern Europeans carry the gene for MS and that its onset can be predicated by the area of the world in which they live. For example, in areas closer to the equator, people have little likelihood of MS while those that live further away, have a higher likelihood. The Best Bet Diet, created by Ashton Embry, seeks to help slow the progression and reverse the effects of MS in those who have developed the disease.

2. Dietary Reasons for MS

Based on the belief that the onset and progression of MS is primarily dietary based, the Best Bet Diet means to helps alleviate these problems. The essay, "Multiple Sclerosis and Food Hypersensitivities" first put forth the idea that diet was a major cause of MS. The dietary-based model for the onset of MS uses the idea that intact food proteins escape through a leaky gut and activates the immune system. The immune system then begins to attack tissue in the central nervous system that is similar in molecular structure to the food proteins being leaked

3. Stop Autoimmune Reactions

The goal of the Best Bet Diet is to halt the autoimmune reactions that result in the body attacking the central nervous systems. The first way the diet helps is by slowing down the leaky gut and, hopefully, preventing food proteins from circulating in the body. The other way the diet helps fight autoimmune reactions is by eliminating foods that contain proteins that resemble the proteins found in the central nervous system.

4. Of Course There Are Restrictions

Because the goal of the Best Bet Diet is to slow and ideally reverse the progression of MS there are severe diet restrictions. On this diet, avoid all dairy products. This includes all animal milks, butters and cheeses and yogurts made from them, as well as anything that contains animal fat dairy products. You should avoid gluten and legumes and all the products containing either. Although you don't have to eliminate refined sugars completely from your diet, it is recommended to avoid these as well whenever possible.

5. Supplement the Diet

Supplements are an important part of the Best Bet Diet plan. When there's an attack on the central nervous system, the first breach is on the blood-brain barrier. Although there's not much research showing a sensible way to improve the blood-brain barrier, they do know that you can strengthen it with certain chemicals. The main purpose for the supplements suggested for the Best Bet Diet are to help in strengthening the blood-brain barrier. The supplements of the Best Bet diet plan are to be ingested daily, in the strict levels prescribed by the diet and include cod liver oil, salmon oil and grape seed extract.
