With the variety of available cardio machines at the gym and for in-home use, it's hard to know which one will give you the best workout. Two of the most popular cardio machines are the elliptical and the treadmill. Each machine has its advantages and drawbacks. Ultimately, the one you will use the most and work the hardest on is the best choice.
Treadmill Features
A treadmill has numerous features and options that make it a good workout choice. You can walk, jog, run or sprint on a treadmill, so it is appropriate for most any fitness level. A treadmill allows you to intensify your workout in two ways: speed and incline. The maximum speed and incline varies among brands and models, but most treadmills go up to at least 10 mph with a 10 percent incline.
Elliptical Features
Some users shy away from a treadmill due to the constant pounding. An elliptical offers a low-impact cardio workout that is gentler on the knees and hips. This is especially appealing if you've had a knee injury or surgery. Most elliptical machines offer several levels, usually between eight and 20, of pedal resistance. Some have an incline ramp that offers a second intensity option, but this is not standard on all elliptical machines.
The Study
A study published in "The Journal of the American Medical Association" tested the effectiveness of six cardio machines, including an elliptical and treadmill. Each participant set the machine to work at a rating of perceived exertion of "fairly light," "somewhat hard" and "hard." These ratings are subjective, which is why the participant chose the intensity settings. The study found that participants had higher levels of energy expenditure on the treadmill at the same rating of perceived exertion on other machines. In other words, they burned more energy even though they felt they were working at the same intensity.
Bottom Line
The study indicates that if you want to burn the most calories at any given level of exertion, the treadmill is your best bet. However, if you don't enjoy being on the treadmill or it bores you after a while, you are not likely to work as hard. In this case, a different cardio machine may be a better choice, at least for one or two workouts.
