Risperdal, generically known as risperidone, is an antipsychotic medication used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and the irritability caused by autism. Available in four forms--injection, liquid suspension, oral tablet and disintegrating tablet--it's effective due to its ability to block elevated chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine. It is, however, accompanied by various side effects.
Common Side Effects
According to eMedTV.com, the side effects of Risperdal have been ranked by the percentage of people affected during clinical trials. The most common side effects include drowsiness, upper-respiratory infections such as the common cold, insomnia, increased production of saliva, stomach pain, nausea, headaches, increased appetite, fatigue, agitation, anxiety, heartburn and dizziness. Between 14 and 67 percent of those taking Risperdal were affected by these common side effects.
Less Common Side Effects
The following side effects affected between 1 and 14 percent of those taking this medication, and are still considered common, but not severe. They include dry mouth, indigestion, sore throat, bladder leakage or incontinence, weight gain, coughing, dry skin, confusion, decrease or increase in sex drive, problems achieving an orgasm, long-term, painful erection, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, runny nose, changes in vision, muscle or joint pain, chest pain, back pain, toothaches, fever, acne and sinus infections.
Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience a large or rapid weight gain, rapid heart beat, dizziness or fainting when you stand up, uncontrollable muscle contractions, abnormal muscle movements, high blood sugar, extreme thirst or hunger, frequent urinating, depression, high blood pressure, thoughts of suicide, feeling restless and breast pain or enlargement in men.
Rare Side Effects
According to eMedTV.com, these side effects occur in less than 2 percent of those taking Risperdal. While they may be effects of Risperdal, there is a possibility they can be side effects of another drug or medical condition. They include nightmares, leg cramping, canker sores, pneumonia, increased or decreased sweating, high triglyceride level, anemia, flatulence (gas), gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD, asthma and hair loss.
Signs of Allergic Reaction
Signs of allergic reaction require immediate medical attention, including swelling of the lips, mouth, face or throat, itching, rash, hives and problems breathing or swallowing.
