Side Effects of Hydrocodone-APAP

Hydrocodone-APAP is a narcotic pain medication that contains acetaminophen and hydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid drug derived from the two natural opiates of codeine and thebaine. In addition to being used for post-operative pain, some pain physicians prescribe hydrocodone to treat chronic pain. For example, it can be used for "breakthrough" pain when other medications do not control a patient's pain.

Heart and Lungs

This narcotic is associated with effects pertaining to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Specifically, taking hydrocodone may induce irregular heartbeats and orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing up). Irregular respiratory changes may occur, such as slower rates of breathing.

Drowsiness

Hydrocodone may produce side effects associated with balance and sleepiness. Specifically, it may cause dizziness, drowsiness and vision problems, all of which could affect an individual's ability to function when driving a car or operating tools and machinery. Additionally, motor skills may be affected. Lying down may reduce this effect.

Gastrointestinal

Common side effects from taking hydrocodone include gastric upset and loss of appetite. For example, nausea and vomiting, stomach pain or generalized stomach upset may occur. Also, this medication may cause major constipation, so stool softeners may be needed.

Addictive Effects

This narcotic carries with it the risk of addiction if used for an extended period of time. Thus, it is not suited for individuals with any chemical dependency history. Also, alcohol should be avoided while taking this drug because it may intensify the effects of this narcotic--both alcohol and hydrocodone depress or slow down the nervous system. Individuals taking this medication should be monitored closely because extended high doses of this medication may cause kidney problems as indicated by urine output and color. Potential exists for damage to the liver.
