Diuretics are substances that increase urine output, which helps the body excrete sodium and excess water. There are over-the-counter diuretic drugs, as well as prescription diuretics, but some herbs and foods also have diuretic properties. These may not work for everyone, and it is important to drink enough fluids when taking diuretics to avoid dehydration. Before using any of these herbs or foods for diuretic purposes, ask your physician whether they are safe for you to consume.
Dandelion
More than just a weed, dandelion is an herb that has been used medicinally for centuries. It has been used to treat liver problems, kidney disease, edema, stomach upset, skin problems and heartburn. The leaves of this plant act as a diuretic. The diuretic properties of dandelion help the kidneys excrete salt and water and are also a source of potassium, which synthetic diuretics typically deplete from the body. Although this herb is generally safe, individuals with gallbladder problems or gallstones should not take this herb. It can also interact with medications, so consult with your health care provider before taking dandelion.
Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettle is a plant that has hairs on its leaves that sting when you touch them. This plant has been used for centuries to help treat gout, eczema, arthritis and sore muscles and joints. It has also been used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, an enlargement of the prostate gland. This herb is known to have diuretic properties and increases urine excretion. Pregnant women should not use nettle because it can induce miscarriage and alter the menstrual cycle. It also interacts with certain types of medications, so check with your doctor before taking stinging nettle.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fresh fruits and vegetables contain water and can act as natural dietetics. These foods are naturally high in water, especially melons, onion, celery and cucumbers. They may not work for everyone, and not a lot of scientific evidence supports the use of these foods as diuretics.
Celery Seed
Celery seed is found in the flower of the celery plant and has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Historically it was used to treat colds, digestive problems, arthritis and water retention. Currently celery seed is used as a diuretic and to relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation. Pregnant women should not use this herb because it may cause the uterus to contract, which can cause miscarriage. If you are taking over-the-counter diuretics, celery seed can make these drugs stronger and cause dehydration.
