Mega-T Green Tea Dietary Supplement is an over-the-counter diet pill that its maker, CCA Industries, claims will raise your metabolism and help you burn fat. The inclusion of acai berry is touted as extra antioxidant support, but the main promise of the formula is centered around the green tea content. You may very well lose some weight with Mega-T, but it will be from the included diet and exercise plan, not from the pills.

Ingredients

You must take one Mega-T caplet twice daily with a full glass of water. Each caplet contains chromium; a green tea leaf standardized extract that includes acai fruit; hoodia; yerba mate; guarana; uva-ursi; capsicum; wakame seaweed; and a proprietary blend whose ingredients are not disclosed on the label. It is worth noting that the "green tea extract" contains "green coffee," which is unroasted regular coffee beans.

Reality

According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, chromium has never been shown to affect body composition. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says the same about hoodia. Yerba mate, guarana and the green coffee beans are stimulants, uva ursi is a diuretic, capsicum increases body heat and wakame can have laxative properties. This formula will cause you to sweat more, visit the bathroom more, and you may be jittery from the stimulants. Dehydration and an emptying of your bowels and bladder may cause your belt to be a bit looser, but it's only a loss of water weight, which will come back as soon as you stop taking the pills.

Diet and Exercise

The Mega-T pills come with a disclaimer that the pills should be used in conjunction with a diet and exercise program, and the company's website outlines such a plan. It's interesting to note that although the makers warn you not to eat fewer than 1,200 calories per day, their recommended menu averages 1,185 calories per day. Such a calorie restriction is almost certain to cause weight loss, and it has nothing to do with the pills. In fact, anything less than 1,200 calories per day is considered a starvation diet for most people, and can cause a loss of lean muscle mass. The exercise program may help with that though -- although the majority are stretching exercises, there are enough body weight exercises like pushups, pullups and chair dips to help you keep some muscle mass as you lose weight. The exercise plan does not contain any aerobic exercise, which is vital for burning calories and maintaining heart health.

Safety

You should not take Mega-T pills if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medications, or have any kind of medical condition. If you are sensitive to caffeine, these pills may cause rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, headaches and nervousness. To be on the safe side, consult your doctor regarding a weight loss program that's right for you. A sensible diet and regular exercise result in lasting weight loss.
