Volleyball equipment includes the essential items, such as the net, the post to hang it on and the ball. Other pieces, like the antennae, the referee's platform and matching uniforms are required for official games but not for recreational use. Optional equipment like knee and elbow pads can help prevent injuries.
Ball
You can't play the game without a ball. Official volleyballs are made of flexible leather or synthetic leather. Volleyballs can be uniform in color or feature a combination of colors. The circumference of the ball should measure 25.6 to 26.4 inches and weigh 9 to 10 oz. with an inside pressure of 4.26 to 4.61 PSI.
Net
The net hovers above the center line. It divides the court into equal parts and one team is on each side. According to USA Volleyball regulations, the net should be 39 inches wide, and the top of the net should have a height of 7 feet 11 5/8 inches for men, and 7 feet 4 1/8 inches for women.
Posts
Posts support the volleyball net and should be placed 20 to 39 inches outside the court's sidelines. The posts must be fixed to the ground without wires and be 8 feet 4 inches in height. The first 5 feet 6 inches of the posts must be wrapped in padding.
Antennae
The antennae are flexible rods fastened to the net and required in official USA Volleyball matches and other competitions. The movements of the antennae help indicate to the referee if the ball or a player has touched the net. Commonly made of fiberglass, the rods should be 5 feet 11 inches long and 3/8 inch in diameter.
Uniforms, Shoes
Equipment for players, according to USA Volleyball rules, includes the uniform and shoes. The uniform is a set of matching apparel, including a numbered jersey, shorts and socks. Each member of the team must have matching uniforms. Shoes for volleyball must be flexible with rubber or composite soles.
Referee's Platform
A referee's platform is required for official volleyball games, according to USA Volleyball rules. The platform must be adjustable in height so the referee's line of sight is about 19 inches above the top of the net. Any part of the platform less than 5 feet 6 inches should be padded.
