Fish oil is derived from the tissues of oily and fatty fish. It is sold as a supplement in liquid oil or capsule form for its omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are known to have many health benefits. Ingestion of the oil is beneficial when consumed, but getting it down and aftertaste are a concern for many consumers. Measures can be taken to minimize these effects.

Step 1

Store the liquid fish oil in the refrigerator to cool down the oil. Cool oil takes longer to break down once consumed and may pass down the esophagus and be absorbed into the body before taste buds recognize what it is. This will also prevent fishy burps or breath that may sometimes arise from ingesting the oil.

Step 2

Add it to beverages. A favorite smoothie or fruit juice can mask the taste of fish oil. Fruits and vegetables with strong flavors such as carrots, apples, berries and citrus are all overwhelming ingredients. Think of blending apples, carrots and spinach together. While spinach may not be the most tasty ingredient in a beverage, the apples and carrots hide the taste of the spinach and make it bearable to drink. The same applies to fish oil. As long as there is not too high a dose of the fish oil, it will be hard to identify in a blended beverage or flavorful juice.

Step 3

Mix it into dishes. Solid foods are another way to hide fish oil taste. Any dish containing fish would be a good place to mix in fish oil. Dishes with heavy sauces and rich ingredients cover subtle flavors well. Even a salad or vegetable dish can absorb the fish oil flavor.

Step 4

Look for quality fish oil. Fish oil of good quality should not have a fishy smell or taste. It may be a sign of rancid oil, due to exposure to elements or just bad quality. Fish oil is not a regulated substance and may be subject to less than satisfactory conditions during the manufacturing process. Quality fish oil follows strict guidelines in the preparation and may have a stamp or seal stating the purity of the product. You can always contact the manufacturer and inquire about the process from beginning to end.
