If you're gearing up for a triathlon, you need to obtain gear that follows the rules. Not every article of clothing has rules governing it, but USA Triathlon does have certain restrictions on particular clothing and accessories. If your triathlon event does not include changing tents, you'll probably want to opt for all-purpose rather than event-specific clothing.
Wetsuits
USA Triathlon wetsuits rules let you wear a wetsuit in water that is cooler than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Wetsuit choices range from full-body suits with long sleeves and long pants to sleeveless wetsuits cut at mid-thigh. The style and coverage you choose is up to you, as is the material. A restriction on material thickness goes into effect Jan. 1, 2013, restricting wetsuit thickness to less than 5 mm. Wetsuits usually contain the insulating and buoyant synthetic fabric of neoprene along with features such as reinforced flat seams, jersey reinforcement in areas that need it and quick-release zippers for easy changing.
Other Swimwear
You can wear a swimsuit of any type or a speed suit or skin suit that is on USA Triathlon's approved list. The list contains more than 40 speed suits and skin suits from a variety of manufacturers. Apparel designed specifically for swimming works best if you have a changing tent unless you are comfortable biking and running with a suit on.
Tops and Bottoms
All-purpose tops and bottoms are available, designed especially for you to wear during all three phases of the event. Tops are generally snug, streamlined tank tops with built-in bras for women. Bottoms include snug, streamlined shorts or tights that reach your ankles or with an inseam as short as 4 inches. Materials are generally quick-drying, moisture-wicking synthetics that keep you free of sweat and dry at a rapid pace once you're out of the water. If you do have a changing tent, you can instead opt for biking shorts or running shorts of any type.
Other Gear
A number of accessories, such as bike helmets and swim caps, are required but come with their own set of rules. USA Triathlon only allows bike helmets approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and you better keep that chinstrap fastened. You can wear your own swim cap, as long as it's a bright color, unless you receive an official cap to wear. Swim goggles are optional, and flippers, fins or other buoyancy devices are prohibited. Triathlons are not a time to jam on your headphones, either, as even carrying an audio player gets you a time penalty. One more thing you must wear, at least during the running, is your number visibly displayed on the front of your upper body.
