Coenzyme Q10, often abbreviated CoQ10, is a molecule similar to vitamins that is naturally produced by the body. CoQ10 plays a role in many biological processes, including the production of energy inside cells, and CoQ10 also possesses potent antioxidant properties. For these reasons, CoQ10 is used to treat a variety of health conditions, including hypertension, commonly called high blood pressure. Although research into using CoQ10 to treat hypertension has shown promising results, additional research is needed to confirm these results. As with any health supplement, consult your doctor before taking CoQ10.

Hypertension

Hypertension is often associated with cardiovascular disease, and lowering high blood pressure is a critical health concern. Several studies have investigated the use of CoQ10 in lowering high blood pressure. Most of these studies have been small clinical trials involving fewer than 100 participants. Averaging the results of all the studies together indicates that CoQ10 can lower systolic blood pressure by up to 11 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by up to 7 mmHg, reports a study published in 2009 by the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Reliability of Data

However, the review of published data raised several questions regarding the reliability of the experimental design of the available studies. These questions, together with the small size of these studies, indicate additional research is needed to definitively ascertain the effect of CoQ10 on hypertension, according to the review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Interaction with Blood Pressure Medications

Because of the possibility that CoQ10 lowers blood pressure, taking CoQ10 while taking medications that lower blood pressure has the potential to cause blood pressure levels to drop to dangerously low levels, warns MedlinePlus. If you are taking blood pressure-powering medications, you should consult your doctor before taking CoQ10. You will need to monitor your blood pressure closely, and may need to lower the dose of blood pressure medication you are taking. You should only alter your dose of blood pressure medication under direction from your doctor.

Side Effects

Taking CoQ10 supplements may cause side effects in certain individuals. The side effects are usually mild, including upset stomach, heartburn, nausea and loss of appetite. Vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur in cases of more severe side effects. In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction may develop. Coenzyme Q10 may also interact with blood-thinning medications such as warfarin, or with the statin family of cholesterol-lowering medications. Ask your doctor before taking CoQ10 if you are taking any of these medications.
