Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin that is needed in the body for processes ranging from metabolism to cognitive function. This vitamin is found naturally in such foods as fish, dairy products, organ meats, eggs, beef and pork. Vegetarians are commonly deficient in this vitamin if they do not take a supplement. Some research suggests that B12 might be of assistance when combined with a weight loss program.

Step 1

Take a B12 supplement daily to help the body metabolize fats and protein. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the recommended daily amount of vitamin B12 for the average adult is approximately 2.4 mcg. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require more B12 daily, but it is not normally recommended for them to be attempting to lose weight while in their condition.

Step 2

Consume a B-complex vitamin to maintain a balance within the body. While taking B12 supplements can support metabolism of fats and proteins, ingesting one of the B vitamins alone might cause an imbalance of another B vitamin. It is often suggested that a B complex be taken to achieve the benefits of all of the B vitamins without risking depletion of others.

Step 3

Get a B12 injection. Some rapid-weight-loss clinics now offer B12 injections as part of a total body fat loss program. These diets are often strict and require medical supervision because they cause the body to drop a lot of weight very quickly. According to an article published on MayoClinic.com written by dietitian Katherine Zeratsky, there is no scientific evidence to show that these injections can in fact increase energy or metabolism and provide definite weight loss.
